St Abbs
I find it very surprising indeed that there are no members/posts from divers who use st abbs up here in the borders, hardly a weekend goes by without many divers converging on the place to dive from boats and the shore , the slipway is virtually useless due to the amount of traffic in the summer......an enterprising householder has actually knocked down the garden wall and supplies hot drinks and food for the divers ...........

I would have thought the "South West" gives it away

I think quite a few people have been to St Abbs on here. Quite a long way North though. H keeps trying to drag me up there, but she hasn't managed it yet...
If I do go, I'll drop into the Farnes too, and go pester the seals. ![]() |

St Abbs does get frequent mentions on YD. Can't see that I will ever bother going there though.

When you put like that.................and it would be cheaper to fly there than drive up here.

I've dived there a few times, and it is genuinely lovely. Not really a place for the depth junkies on here, more one for the fish prodders - it's a marine reserve so you get absolutely bags of life - it's the best place in the UK for Octopus-Spotting as far as I am concerned! The viz has always been excellent whenever I've been there as well.
One nice wreck dive too, the Glanmire, 30ish metres. Would really like to go back actually, the only bad memories I have are of the speed cameras on the A1! Might have some piccies knocking around somewhere, will have a looky-see later. I for one would definitely recommend it.

St Abbs:
![]() I think in the space of four dives this particular weekend we saw three Octopus / Octopi / Octopuses - one was the legendary "free swimming Octopus" which got away a bit too quickly for the startled photographer, but here are the other two (the first one was especially longsuffering and tolerated about 15 photos before looking a bit miffed and buggering off) Octopus One: ![]() ![]() ![]() And Octopus Two ![]() There is an absolute profusion of life up there, and most of it is very unstressed about curious divers - perhaps because it is so firmly established as a no-take zone. As you can probably see above, it's a great place to see some of the shyer creatures that live in UK waters - these particular photos were taken on a trip where both I and my buddy were OC - I'd very much like to go back CCR and see if I can find even more. Photos not mine - provided by the lovely Jules, I just pointed the torch. Bah. Now I've looked at those again I've really got to go back.

Thankyou for the kind comments. I have loads of st abbss photos, my club tend to do a trip there most months, it's where we dip our newly qualified divers into salt water for the first time.
I only held the camera and pressed the button, Helen's talents as torch pointer (Lighting director daaaarling!) are legenday. Extra points for free swimming octopusses which landed Helen the title of "queen of the octopus spotters" Jules |
