Is it possible that the photo is of another ship. Possibly the Lyons after the collision. If you notice the top line of portholes has railings above them on the Seaford and this ship it is solid. Also ignoring the obvious paint job, there is an extra set of davits on the back of the ship which I cannot see on the Seaford.

I cannot believe that this ship could have been back in service after a refit to repair this amount of damage. Remember she only sailed for 1 year before sinking.

You're right, that's the picture I've seen. I'm sure it's the same ship but I'm intrigued to know what happened and when.

TSS Sussex was the Denny's Replacement for the Seaford. She came out in 1896. The ships were very similar and even the engines were identical. The Sussex had and extra 12' in length. Sussex was torpedoed on a voyage from Folkstone to Dieppe in March 1916 but was not a total loss.

Just a note that Denny's made quite a number of ships for LBSCR. Following on from the Seaford and Sussex was the Arundel which had two funnels and was the improved version.

Also there were others of similar design with one funnel and quite a bit smaller. These being the Calvados and he sister ship the Trouville. Both of these were cargo carriers of about GT570 tonnes

Sussex was salvaged after being torpedoed.

All LBSCR ships are here-

The Levy postcard company photographed a lot of the ships. Got some in my collection.
