When i went to school, we used to go on a school trip to London every year. Can't remember the place, but there were literally hundreds of shipbuilders models on display . . .

I walked past the International maritime organisation HQ on Albert embankment the other night - there were a load of ship models in their foyer - although they appeared to be all quite modern. There is also a quite attractive statue outside that looks like the bows of a ship breaking out through the glass towards the thames.

thought I recognised it - I inherited my copy from my late grandfather. The anti-german tone of it makes me giggle.

I love that shot of the crumpled bow (on the shipwreck thread). Amazing it would fold up like that.

Cheers

I have the whole set bound into 4 volumes. They come on sale from time to time and are not horribly expensive. ( Shipping Wonders of the World. Vol 4 has a full index )

ships plans and early magazines

I have a nice set of " plans " from a 1907 edition of International Marine Engineering. The proper term is general arrangement or GA. These early magazines are very hard to get hold of. We have The Steamship,International Marine Engineering and Shipbuilding and Shipping Record all provide an immense amount of information regarding the sort of ships we dive. The Blue Peter came along between the wars and illustrated all aspects of cruise travel. The adverts themselves are very interesting.

This set of plans is for an American revenue cutter. Steam driven with two boilers. ( an unusual arrangement of a scotch boiler and a water tube boiler sited for and aft ). Much of the layout is in common with any small steamship of the time although obviously there is no provision for cargo storage or handling.

The familiar round scotch boilers at the Harland and Wolff works.

The engine room again showing coal storage or bunkers. Handy for the boiler room, some protection against torpedo attack and central weighting for the ship.A steam coaster could burn 25 to 30 tons of coal a day.
