Research
Thought I would start a thread which could be useful to anyone researching ships. Will keep adding to this all winter and hopefully others will too Please note on scanned images the web links are not active.
Starke/Schell - Miramar. Hopefully self explanatory. Miramar is free and very useful for individual ship searches. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

For digitized images of Registers 1930 - 1945 use-
![]() For written requests or search visits apply - ![]() I have found Southampton useful for photocopies . You do have to be date specific though.Possibly earlier registers will be scanned at sometime in the future. Original early registers are rare and expensive. They do appear on Ebay from time to time. Expect £200 plus for something just pre WW1. I have seen earlier reprints but as yet have not traced the source. |

"Merchant Ships" by EC Talbot- Boothe.
Published every few years from the 1930's to the 1950's. About 2000 images in each issue and really a bit of a lucky dip. See them on Ebay once in a while . Expect to pay around £50.Lots of Company details and flags. Super adverts. This page features our old friend Aeneas. The Birgitte illustration also came from here. ![]() |

i've only recently used this site. Appears to be quite useful for wartime stuff coming from the US, however ,you have to register. It takes 2 minutes and all it needs is a username and password (no spam in the email either, so looks ok). . .
http://www.nytimes.com/ look for the archive section. . . . A very good site for pictures of old clippers and other sailing ships: http://www.pictureaustralia.org/ Just be aware that a lot of similar ships had the same name. . . . now onto the Times database. . . It's free and doesn't cost me a penny.....All you need to do is go down to your local library and ask them there. It seems to be a bit hit and miss depending on where you're located in the UK as its done by county. Not all counties have free access. If you live in Somerset go here with your library card number: http://infotrac.london.galegroup.com/itweb/somelib |

Just wondered if anyone can answer a couple of questions for me. . . .
1. Below is a typical example of a sailing report which lists ships that leave port on their journey from port A to port B. Would there be any record at port A that would list the cargo the ship had loaded? ![]() 2. I'm after the Board of Trade Wreck Returns for a specific year. However, i see there are also Board of Trade Wreck Registers, casualty reports etc etc etc. ( http://www.nmm.ac.uk/server/show/conWebDoc.575 ) Which one would i need that would show the cargo carried by a particular vessel, or is it none of them? 3. When a ship sinks, there is usually a bit of info saying something like - carrying general cargo or coal etc etc. If there was a mixed cargo, but it predominately carried more of one cargo item than another is it the larger quantity that is recorded. i.e. 200 tons of coal and 2 crates of beer (!) would it be stated that it just carried a cargo of coal? Cheers in advance Steve |

A site for model ships. These can be useful for understanding a ships general arrangement.
